ADUs (Detached)
& Junior ADUs (Attached or In-Home)
The County encourages the production of affordable housing throughout the County by the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and junior accessory dwelling units (JADUs).
ADUs, also known as granny flats, backyard cottages, in-law units, or converted garages, can meet the needs of homeowners while helping to create new housing for our community. ADUs provide homeowners with flexibility, income, and generational wealth as their families grow and lives change. From space for your loved ones to supporting your family income or building your retirement with rental income, an ADU gives you options.
The County has a few pre-approved ADU designs available for free. The County of Napa offers over 50 unit designs, some of which are free. Sacramento County also has many plans online.
NOTE: Short-term ADU rentals are NOT allowed, and vacation rentals are capped with a wait list with zoning regulations. Please note that ADUs require property setbacks for both attached and stand-alone units.
The Planning & Building Department has developed a website to walk you through all of the steps of designing and building your ADU. Click on the image below to learn more.
