The Humboldt County Planning & Building Department is developing an ordinance to establish outdoor lighting design guidelines aimed at reducing light pollution and preserving the night sky in unincorporated areas of Humboldt County. 

Background

The Planning & Building Department has been developing a draft Outdoor Lighting Ordinance to address community concerns, complaints and implementation measures in the county’s 2017 Conservation and Open Space Elements of the General Plan, specifically Scenic Resources Implementation Measure 5 - Lighting Design Guidelines.

If you would like to be part of the discussion on this ordinance, please consider attending the Humboldt County Planning Commission's workshop on this topic during their regular meeting on Thursday, March 20. 

Community members have the option to attend on Zoom or in person at the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors’ Chamber, located at 825 Fifth St. in Eureka. The Planning Commission meeting will start at 6 p.m. and the agenda, which includes the written staff report, can be found on the county’s meeting agenda web page.

Following the workshop, staff will update the ordinance based on feedback received at the workshop. The ordinance will then enter the hearing stage where the Planning Commission will make their recommendations to the Board of Supervisors, who will consider those recommendations and make a decision regarding the proposed ordinance.
