Recreational Vehicle (RV)

Introduction

Residents who use recreational vehicles (RVs) should be aware of the specific guidelines regulating their use within the county, as per Humboldt County Code 314-81.1. Here are the key points:

  1. Permitted Locations for RV Use:
    • RVs can only be used as residences in designated areas such as manufactured home parks, special occupancy parks, or public camping areas. The use must comply with the Health and Safety Code of the State of California and shall be permitted through the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
  2. Temporary Use Permits:
    • Short-Term Residence: Individuals who have a permanent residence elsewhere may use an RV as a temporary residence for up to six months with a special permit issued by the Director.
    • Construction Sites: Construction contractors may use an RV as a temporary office on a job site for the duration of the project.
  3. Temporary Occupancy:
    • The Chief Building Inspector can issue temporary occupancy permits for RVs on a property undergoing construction, valid for six months and renewable if substantial progress is made.
    • The RV must be disconnected from utilities and vacated upon permit expiration to avoid being declared a public nuisance.
  4. Compliance and Removal:
    • Upon the expiration of any temporary use permit, the RV must be removed from the property. Failure to do so will classify the RV as a public nuisance subject to abatement as per the Code.
