Fortuna Public Library Reopens on Tuesday, March 3 Following Accessibility Renovations

County Administrative Office Posted on February 27, 2026

The Fortuna Public Library will reopen its doors to the public on Tuesday, March 3 after being temporarily relocated in November 2025 for accessibility renovations.

Completed improvements for the Fortuna Library Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Project will now provide a more welcoming, accessible and modernized library to better serve all visitors.

Due to the work required to make accessibility improvements, the Fortuna Public Library temporarily relocated to the City of Fortuna's Rohner Recreation Hall Classroom, located in Rohner Park at 7 Park St. in Fortuna. The temporary location will continue to be open today, Friday, Feb. 27 until 5 p.m. and for one final day tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note that computers, printing and copying services will be unavailable at the temporary location as the library prepares to move back to its permanent home.

Project Details

Work to secure funding for the Fortuna Library ADA Compliance Project began in 2022 in partnership with the City of Fortuna who was awarded just over $219,000 in funds through the California State Library Building Forward Infrastructure Grant Program. Then, in May 2023, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved over $109,500 in matching funds dedicated to this project.

Completed improvements include the reconstruction of two single-user, all-gender accessible restrooms, reconfiguration of the library’s circulation desk, the creation of an enhanced teen section and full interior refurbishments, including but not limited to new paint and flooring. These upgrades were designed to enhance accessibility and long-term use of the Fortuna library.

Over the next few weeks, Fortuna library patrons may see some remaining work ongoing, including minor projects like door replacement and installation. The majority of this work is expected to take place outside the library’s public hours to minimize disruptions for library visitors.

This project reflects the County of Humboldt's broader commitment to ensure all public facilities comply with ADA accessibility standards and promote equal access to educational and creative opportunities for residents and visitors alike. "We are really looking forward to returning to a much more accessible and improved library," said Humboldt County Director of Library Services Chris Cooper. "This project would not have been possible without the collaboration of the City of Fortuna, the County Administrative Office’s ADA Compliance Team, and our dedicated library staff and partners, who have all been focused on reopening the library on time so the community can enjoy the new space. I’d like to thank everyone involved for their partnership."

The remodeled Fortuna Public Library, located at 753 14th St. in Fortuna, will reopen to the public on Tuesday, March 3 at noon. To learn more about the library’s broad range of programs and services, hours of operation and more, please visit HumLib.org or call 707-725-3460.
